Combined with the Kite Shield, taking Damage with this class becomes an unlikely affair compared to something like the Knight.
The Spear is a melee weapon with the range needed to make one-on-one combat more forgiving. It’s designed to keep you away from as much danger as possible without becoming a ranged class. Both of these choices are clear indicators of how FromSoft wants you to play the Herald. The Herald starts with a Spear and Kite Shield in his on/off hands. This is thanks in no small part to your starting equipment, which dictates your play style by extension. The Herald is far more forgiving than almost every other starting class in the game. You could choose the Herald and opt to spec into whatever stats you want. It’s worth point out that, as with every other class in DS3, the Herald is more of a quick-start than a designated role.
While this means you can’t change your mind and unlock it later on down the road, it does add to the ease of access that the Herald class naturally caters to. In other words, you get it at the start of the game-no trials or tribulations. As we just mentioned, the Herald is one of Dark Souls 3’s ten starting classes.
